Ricardo: Can protein amino acid cause heart burn? How many protein shakes can I drink in a day?

Hi Ricardo,

Thanks for your question.

There is little info and research on whether protein amino acid has anything to do with heart burn. Heart burn can be caused by many reasons. People experience heart burn because the stomach acid can reflux, going back into the esophagus, thus causing the burning sensation.

As you can see, heart burn has got nothing to do with the heart. An individual experiences heart burn because of stomach acid entering the esophagus. This is usually caused by too much food in the stomach, or too much pressure in the stomach. For instance, overeating can cause one to experience heartburn. Obesity is another common cause for heartburn.

So if your stomach is somehow allergic to whey protein (perhaps due to the milk extracts), and you are getting gas, it is possible for you to experience a burning sensation in your esophagues due to the acid reflux. Or the reflux may simply be caused by other foods. If you experience any discomfort, please see a doctor immediately.

As for how many whey protein shakes you can take a day, it all depends on how well your body absorbs the protein. For instance, some people can drink 3 or more shakes a day and feel completely fine. Others can only manage 2 a day or they will feel bloated.

Although whey protein shakes is generally safe for most people, it is not recommended to drink protein shakes excessively. Protein shakes are only meant as supplements. As long as you are not allergic to milk products, you should be able to drink 1 to 2 shakes a day without any problems. You should, of course, strive to get the majority of the protein you need from your daily meals - i.e. from natural food sources. Consume whey protein shakes only as a dietary supplement.
