Can You Replace Meals with Protein Shakes
Question: Can you replace meals with protein shakes?
Answer:
The answer is that it's not advisable. Here's why. A protein shake contains a high amount of nothing but proteins - usually between 15g to 25g per serving.
Compare that with a proper meal.
A proper meal, assuming you are having a balanced diet, should contain fiber, carbohydrates and proteins. That means you are consuming lean meat, fruits, vegetables, rice and noodles. With the variety of food you are consuming, that also means your body is taking in important vitamins that are non-existent in protein shakes.
Protein shakes are meant to be a supplement. So if you are considering consuming protein shakes on a regular basis, use them wisely and correctly. Since they are meant to be supplements, then use them as supplements. Try not to replace them with proper meals. You may be preventing your body from acquiring important nutrients and vitamins that you get in a proper meal.
If you really have to skip meals, then at least take a fruit together with your protein shake. The key is to have a more balanced diet. So you can anything that complements the protein shakes - multivitamins, fresh fruits, pre-made meals that you can pop into the over, etc.
Some people are very tempted to replace breakfast with protein shakes. Don't do that! After 8 hours of sleep, your body has gone without food for a long period of time. You need a fresh supply of vitamins, nutrients and carbs to stay alert for the day.
Also, don't try to replace meat with protein shakes.
