Does Whey Protein Supplements Work?
Does whey protein supplements work? It is commonly believed that whey protein can help to gain weight, build strength and assist in growing bigger muscles.
You see rows of whey protein powders in your local health stores and this question has probably popped into your head more than once: Does whey protein supplements really deliver as promised?
There was this story in a health paper about a guy (we'll call him Tom for the sake of convenience) trying to gain weight.
Tom was like any other teenager. He was active, with an average build. However, he had one problem - he felt that he was too skinny and wanted to gain weight. So he started consuming protein supplements. But he soon noticed that the supplements didn't help.
Do you know what Tom did that went wrong?
Well, it wasn't the protein supplements that were at fault here. Tom consumed whey protein without changing his lifestyle. A part of the equation is missing - that of muscle stimulation. In other words, Tom must exercise!
And being young, Tom would have seen great results because a young body tend to recover very quickly due to its higher metabolic rate. Tom probably had a metabolic rate that's higher than most people. The fact that he finds it hard to put on weight is evidence.
If someone were to go up to Tom and advise him to workout or take up a sport competitively, Tom would have experienced very different results.
The news story then went on to reveal that Tom eventually did find out what he did wrong. He now exercises 14 hours a week. He spent about 8 hours playing competitive volleyball. The rest of the exercise time was spent in the gym or on running. As a result, he is now the proud owner of a muscular body.
If you're still not convinced that whey protein supplements work, ask yourself this question. Ever watch a bodybuilding competition and wonder how they become so big? Do you think exercise alone is enough to build up such muscles?
Exercise will stimulate and encourage muscle growth - that's a fact. But without adequate nutrition, the muscles cannot repair and grow at a rapid rate. To sustain the growth, the presence of basic building blocks must be there. The building blocks for muscles? You guessed it right - proteins!
Proteins contain important amino acids that speed up the recovery and growth of muscles. It is hard to imagine competitive athletes training everyday without consuming enough protein to assist in muscle recovery. The athlete will suffer from over-fatigue!
So, does whey protein supplements really work? The answer is simple - yes it does! There is no question about it. But the secret is that you must exercise. When you do, the proteins will be used to help you build bigger muscles. That's how you become stronger and fitter.
Whey protein supplements also help you to achieve the physical appearance you want. When you build lean muscle mass, your metabolism also increases. The higher your metabolic rate, the more fat you burn. So you find that even when you eat more, it's not easy to put on weight.
Whatever your goals are, note that it takes time to get there. Don't just consume whey protein supplements for a week and then throw in the towel. It doesn't work that way. You have to keep training hard and be consistent in both your training and dieting. Over the course of several weeks, you will start to see the results you are looking for. After that, there is no looking back.
