How Affordable Are Whey Protein Shakes?

Whey protein shakes muscles ASK Fitness Related Question Here

If you want to grow strong and muscular, then you must learn how to eat well. Eating well means you should consume high quality protein.

Unfortunately, many people think that high quality protein such as whey protein is prohibitively expensive. So they rather consume less protein in their diet.

If you are working out intensively, this can lead to problems because your body NEEDS proteins to repair the damage that you have done to the muscle tissue during workout.

Of course, if you can afford it, you can always buy pre-packed whey protein shakes from the gym after a workout for about $6 or so. But for most people, this option is not economical (think students, lower wage workers, etc.) Does that mean that they must be denied the high quality whey protein that they need?

The good news is, there are alternatives. Contrary to popular belief, whey protein is actually quite affordable. You can make your own affordable protein shakes just by purchasing some whey protein powder. Let's do a little math here.

When you buy whey protein, try to invest in a 5 pound tub instead of a 2 lb tub. That way, you save instantly based on volume. A 5lb container rarely cost you more than $50. There are many good quality protein powders in the market these days and you shouldn't have much trouble looking for one that suits you. Try GNC or Optimum Nutrition. These are two of the most trusted brands.

Back to our example. Let's say you spend $50 for a 5lb tub of whey protein powder. Each tub contains approximately 70 servings. Each serving is measured by 1 round scoop (included in the tub), and can provide you with 25 grams of protein.

Now that you have your numbers, you can easily workout the cost per serving.

We take $50, and divide that by 70 servings, and we get the cost of $0.71 per serving. Compare that with a $6 protein shake that you buy from the gym! Of course whey protein products appear expensive - it's all about perception. But when you make the shake on your own, the cost is less than $1 a shake. Can you afford to spend $1 each day on a protein shake? Of course you can!

In fact, at times, whey protein shakes can even be more economical than convention foods. Each servings contain 25 grams of protein. How much chicken do you think you have to eat to get 25 grams of protein. I bet it cost you more than $1.

Of course, whey protein powder can never replace natural foods. So don't use it as a meal replacement. The intended usage is as a dietary supplement. In other words, eat your chicken breast, fish, pork, etc. and then supplement your diet with high quality protein such as whey protein shakes.
