Harbir has a question for us: Is whey protein safe for an 18 year old? Answer below.

I am assuming here that you are a healthy individual, with no allergic reactions to milk products. The most common complain about whey protein is that it contains milk extracts. Since whey protein is derived from milk, those who are sensitive to milk products may get some adverse reactions after consuming whey protein.

But for healthy individuals, drinking whey protein shakes is almost like drinking milk, except that you get much cleaner protein. In other words, you are consuming clean protein that doesn't contain a high amount of sugar and fat. Sometimes, other milk products may contain a higher level of sugar and fat to make them taste better.

So for sure, whey protein is safe for a healthy 18 year old. The whey protein shakes in today's market are generally quite safe for both teens and adults. They are, however, not recommended for children as kids tend to get stronger reactions to the foods they consume.

Bear in mind that whey protein is a dietary supplement. It is a high quality protein source that is meant to SUPPLEMENT your diet. It is not meant to replace wholesome foods. So don't skip meals just because whey protein is readily available to you.

Work out how much protein you need for the day, then stick to your meal plans. Drink your protein shake just so you can meet your daily protein targets. You can read the rest of the articles on this website for more information on when to drink shakes, how much to drink, etc.

When buying protein powders, try to go for something that you KNOW you will like - like chocolate or cookies and cream. The taste may feel a little weird in the beginning, but after a couple of weeks or so, you will grow to like the shakes. You can also check out some of the whey protein recipes on this website.

Hope that helps.

I take protein shakes all the time and I am 21. I don't think there is anything to worry about. Should there be any discomfort, try mixing your whey shakes with bananas. Or if you suspect anything, don't hesitate to go visit a doctor.
