Is there really such a thing as nighttime weight loss shakes? Let's find out.

First, let's answer this question - is it appropriate to drink whey protein shakes at night in the first place?

Many people think that in order to lose weight, they must avoid eating ANYTHING before they go to bed. This belief is true in general, but does not really apply to people who are working out actively. Why is this so?

The reason why you SHOULD drink whey protein shake at night is because your body will be going without food for long hours during the night. Assuming that you sleep an average of 8 hours every night, that means your body is going without food for 8 hours on a daily basis. What do you think is happening to your muscles while you sleep?

Your muscles are actually recovering. Be reminded that your muscles GROW when you are resting and recovering. So your muscles are really growing and repairing while you are sleeping. What you need to do then, is to supply the body with a good supply of CLEAN protein right before you go to bed to support this growth. I mention CLEAN protein with emphasis because you don't want to consume additional calories before bedtime. Remember that what the body fails to burn can be converted into fat. And surely, you don't want that to happen if you are trying to lose weight. So foods containing lots of carbs and sugars are definitely out because your metabolism is reduced while you sleep.

Now that we have established that it IS a good idea to drink whey protein shakes at night, let's take a look at some good nighttime shakes out there that are good for weight loss.

If your intention is to build muscles and burn fat, then look at some of those weight loss protein shakes that are available in the market. What is the difference between weight loss protein shakes and ordinary protein shakes? Weight loss shakes are primarily designed for building up lean muscle mass AND losing fat. So you find almost zero carbs and sugar content in these shakes. The amount of protein is also not as much per serving when compared to conventional whey protein powders.

What you need to do is to pick a good weight loss protein shake (there are several out there) and then consume 1 serving per day before you go to bed. You are consuming high quality protein with very little (or zero) carbs and sugars. So you are really consuming very little calories. Each serving may contain less than a hundred calories. The protein will go towards supporting lean muscle growth and there won't be any risk of putting on fat while you sleep.
