Viewing: Someone looking to gain lean muscle mass and loss weight asked this question. What is a good protein shake to take if you want to lose weight, and build muscle mass? [flick]lean muscle(1)[/flickr] In general, all whey protein shakes are low calorie, and contains high quality proteins. But there is a distinction between protein powders that are meant for the average consumer and those that are meant for more serious athletes and bodybuilders. Protein powder that are meant for serious sports people. Those who are hardcore about sports tend to invest in higher quality proteins. Because of the intensity of the exercises that they are engaged in, they tend to consume protein shakes with a larger amount of whey protein. Usually, for such protein powders, each protein shake serving (1 scoop) contains between 23 grams to 25 grams of high quality protein. The protein drink is also low in sugar and carbs. When you add both together, they contain less than 5 grams. The total calories for a whey protein shake is only about 130 calories. Note that you get the same amount of calories just from drinking a soft drink or any sugared drink. So what is the difference? The difference is that a soft drink contains primarily of sugar, which helps to build and store fat in your body. A whey protein shake, on the other hand, contains mostly protein, which helps to build lean muscle mass. So if you ditch soft drinks and consume protein shakes a supplement, you WILL lose weight (assuming you exercise to burn calories). Protein powder that are meant for average consumers. However, not all people exercise at high intensity. There are many who exercise just to burn calories and for recreational purposes. Most just exercise because they want to lose weight (for obvious health reasons). For these people, they may not need so much protein in a single serving. There are protein shakes that are specifically designed for weight loss purposes. In general, these shakes contain less protein per serving (about 12 to 15 grams per serving), and almost zero sugar and carb. The total calories, as a result, is also a lot lesser - around 100 (or less) calories per serving. Many who are looking to lose weight, especially ladies, find that such protein shakes are more suitable for them. They don't need such a huge serving, so they just stick to proven protein powders that are designed to help them lose weight. Does it really matter? In my personal opinion, high quality protein is high quality protein. So it doesn't really matter which type of protein powder you choose. You can choose a protein powder that gives 25 grams of protein per serving. But if you find that it's too much for you to take, just take half a scoop instead. That will give you 12 grams of protein, and half the amount of calories (about 65). A previous study has been down to see whether slow or fast acting protein works better. It is recommended that those with higher levels of amino acids in their blood stream tend to show better results. So it's not just about reducing calories intake. It's also about building lean muscle mass. One serving that gives 25 grams of protein is not too much. So drink up! |
