Just been introduced to casein protein? Perhaps you are wondering when is a good time to drink casein protein. Here are the answers you are looking for.

There are different types of protein - hydrolyzed, isolates, concentrate and casein.

Hydrolyzed and isolates are of the highest quality, and they are also the fastest acting. In other words, they get absorbed by the body very quickly - usually within the hour. This makes the protein extremely useful if you want to recover quickly from intensive exercises. Usually, such protein is consumed right after a workout.

Whey concentrate is a lower quality protein. Such products do work, and they usually cost cheaper. They are also quickly digested by the body. So if you are budget conscious, whey concentrate is a good alternative.

Most people have never even heard of casein protein. This is because such protein is not heavily advertised and usually, only advanced or seasoned athletes and bodybuilders pay attention to casein protein. Casein protein is the slowest acting among all protein types. It takes up to 4 hours or more for the protein to be completely released and digested by the body. If you know this, you would immediately know when to drink casein protein.

1) Recovery days. - You don't need to replenish protein so quickly because you are not working out on recovery days. So you can depend on casein protein to ensure that your body gets a steady amount of protein throughout the day.

2) At night. - When you go to sleep, your body goes without food and water for 8 hours. This is the perfect time to have some slow releasing protein in the body to help with muscle growth and repair.

3) In the morning. - You can take casein protein in the morning if you know that you have a long day ahead. After taking your casein protein, you can go about your daily activities and let your body absorb the protein slowly. Any workout in from mid afternoon onwards will be fine.

4) On holiday. - You are going on holiday and will miss training for a few days. In this case, casein protein will suit you more.

Bear in mind that it may not be necessary to purchase casein protein solely to reap the benefits of casein protein.

Many modern whey protein powders are actually protein blends. They may be advertised as whey isolates or hydrolyzed whey because most fitness enthusiasts are looking out for that stuff. But if you read the nutritional labels carefully, you will find that the product may contain a small amount of whey concentrate and casein protein. This is to ensure that the body gets a more steady stream of protein while waiting for the next protein intake.

In general, remember that casein protein is good for any time of the day except for pre/post workouts. For pre/post workouts, fast acting whey protein is more appropriate.

Want to slow things down a little to let your muscle tissue grow and recover? Casein protein is the way to go.
