In other words, they contain different types of protein that are both fast and slow releasing. That means these products are meant to cater to your protein needs throughout the day. Usually, a protein shake will give you 25 grams of protein, plus or minus. You can take double servings in a single shake if you like, with 40 grams of protein. If you are really bulking up, you may need to drink 2 protein shakes a day. The other 2 timings that are good for consuming protein shakes are (1) morning and (2) a couple of hours before going to bed. This is to ensure that your body gets a fresh supply of protein both day and night. What about days when you don't work out? A lot have already been written about taking whey protein without working out. The assumption here is that you are on rest days. If so, then the recommendation is to continue taking whey shakes even on rest day. The reason behind this recommendation is that while you are resting, your muscles are recovering and that is when it needs proteins for repair and growth. So don't stop taking your protein shakes on recovery and rest days. But if you are thinking of taking protein shakes without working out AT ALL, then it's a no go. Remember, whey protein is a health supplement. Too much or too little can be harmful to health. So work closely with a fitness professional or nutritionist and calibrate your whey protein servings to obtain optimal health. |
