To answer this question, we have to take a look at the differences between whey and casein protein. The key difference between the two is that whey protein is a fast ingesting protein, while casein protein is the opposite - it is a slow ingesting protein. In other words, if you consume whey protein, you can expect the amino acids to be released into the body within a couple of hours. But if you consume casein proteins, the amino acids are released slowly into the body. Does that mean one is better than the other? Well, no. All it means is that you have to learn when to drink whey protein and when to drink casein protein. In general, whey protein is most suitable for consumption when the body is CRAVING for proteins. This happens early in the morning, or right after an intensive workout. There is a 2 hour window period which most bodybuilders already know about, and it's always good to drink whey protein shakes within this 2 hour period. After that, the ingestion rate goes down. So, back to our question - is it better to drink whey or casein protein at night? It would appear that casein is a better solution because the body is at rest while you sleep. So it helps to have casein protein being released bit by bit in the body while you sleep. This ensures that the body receives amino acids throughout the night. Again, there is no hard and fast answer to this question. Some people drink a combination of both at night - 50 whey protein and 50 casein protein. The amount you drink depends very much on your own needs - how much protein you want to take for the day, did you workout for the day, do you think your body needs the extra portion of whey protein at night? Only you know the answers to these questions. But since you already understand the difference between whey and casein, it's easier for you to decide on how much whey or casein to consume at night. |
