Some people want to know if it's a good idea to drink whey protein without working out. Well, this question is a little different from the one we addressed in a previous article.

In the previous article, about taking whey protein without working out, the assumption is that the individual is consuming whey protein on non-workout days.

Some people tend to think of whey protein powder as some kind of magical fitness supplements. That is, supplements that will get them to look ripped without ever having to workout.

Well, sorry to prick your bubble but if you are not going to work out, you are not going to achieve your fitness goals. That is for sure. The reason is that whey protein powder only becomes useful when you are doing the actual work of stimulating muscle growth.

When you workout, you are sending signals to your body that your muscle needs to grow. After your workout, with adequate rest and nutrition, your body will start to adapt and that is how you become fitter and stronger.

Our recommendation?

First, make sure you have a workout plan that you can follow closely. Your workout plan should provide you with at least 3 to 4 workouts per week. Anything less than that will be ineffective.

Work with experienced fitness enthusiasts for a start or if you can afford it, hire a personal trainer. Start at your own level of fitness to ensure that you don't over train. Over training can be dangerous and may lead to injuries. If you injure yourself, you can forget about going back to the gym for quite some time, and that will slow down your progress. So try to get it right the first time round. Usually, the first week at the gym are just test sessions. You are just getting some numbers (how much weight to lift) and observing how your body respond to the stress. Then make adjustments accordingly.

Second, have a good look at your diet. Your diet should support your work out activities. Of course, we are assuming that you know what you want to achieve. If you are going for muscle mass, then you will be lifting heavier. You also need to consume a higher amount of protein. But if you are training to lose weight and look slim, then your workouts should contain more repetitions with lighter weights. You also don't need as much protein but you need to consume more carbs as your workouts tend to take longer.

Now what do you think will happen if you keep consuming whey protein without EVER working out?

Since your body doesn't need the extra proteins, the amino acids will either be flushed out of your system (what a waste of expensive supplements) or converted to fat. You will be putting on more weight instead of looking slimmer.

The body doesn't find it easy to convert protein to fat, but if there is excess, the body does have the ability to convert protein to fat. So if that is not your goal (looking fat), then avoid taking whey protein if you are not working out.

Find a way to incorporate some kind of workout plan into your hectic schedule. Then consume whey protein shakes regularly. You should be making good progress in a few weeks time.
